Berean Church Of Christ Blog Post
                                       Looking to the past for direction to the future
  Is "repentance of sin" a prerequisite before salvation

   Young David stood alone against the giant Goliath from the town of Gath with nothing but a pocket full of stones and a sling, and the knowledge that the true and living God was with him and all of Israel. Spiritually I am standing in David's shoes facing a type of giant of a different nature. My stones are the words on this blog page. My sling is this website I have created to throw these stones. The enemy is the accumulation of all the lies that Satan has fashioned into a sword that is preventing the truth of God's word from breaking the chains and shackles that bind men in fear and condemnation.                                                                                                I am a self-taught evangelist from the one and only church described in the Bible, the Church of Christ. My professors were not from Freed Hardeman, Lipscomb, and Harding Universities. I do not ascribe to modern-day doctrines that trace themselves back to the "restoration movement." I sat at the feet of the apostles Paul, Peter, and John. Beyond that, I listened carefully to the teachings of the early bishops who themselves sat at the apostles' feet (quite literally). I am not a scholar (thank God) but I know how to use a Strong's concordance and a Vines encyclopedia of Greek New Testament words. I have learned how to utilize hermeneutics and proper exegesis as well. In an attempt to eradicate current modern-day false theology (let me call it what it is) on a host of topics I have adopted the use of the title "Berean" Church of Christ to describe the attitude we must possess to cut through the haze of lies and half-truths that pass today as "the truth" within the brother- hood. "They received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so." Will you be like the Bereans and journey with me all the way back to when this thing called "truth" and "grace" first began? Maranatha!
To Repent Or Not To Repent
   After 42 years as a Christian as a member of the Church of Christ, I would have never given a thought to questioning whether repentance of one's sins was doctrinally questiona-able. It is printed on all the Church of Christ literature we hand out. In my 46 years (total) as a Christian, I can not recall one lesson on the topic in a bible class or from the pulpit. That is until about four years ago. I was surfing the web, as the expression goes when I inadvertently came across a post on this topic which caught my eye.
'Repent. The end is only 150 million years away.'
    The title was 'Repentance and Salvation.' The author was Zane C. Hodge. It was his doctoral thesis from a Texas Baptist College. I was very shocked by what I was reading. I printed all 86 pages and began reading the material like a man on a miss-ion. (link provided, click here)There were points of disagreement but as a whole, I realized the importance of this paper and began my own independent research into the matter. I am not the type to be easily persuaded to have a "change of mind" about a long-held doctrinal belief. But I was. The deeper I looked, the more convinced I became. This was of extreme importance because it is directly tied to, of all things, salvation. Therefore I will be blogging on this topic for some time. I have written my own paper on this topic titled,  'To Repent or Not to Repent,  that is the question.' click here to read my 28-page report. There are 10 topics to consider that are worthy of your time if you wish to learn what I did. they are;
     1. Definitions

     2. Covenant distinctive's
     3. What effect does no. 2 have on Mt., Mk., Lk., and Jn?
     4. The great commission, Mt. 28:19-20 and Mk. 16:15-16
     5. Acts 2:38 'repent and be baptized'
     6. The 10 examples of conversions in Acts
     7. Theology in the book of Romans
     8. Examples of the use of the word repent in the epistles
     9. The role of baptism as it relates to repentance
     10. Respecting the 'silence' of the scriptures
